Jenkins Trophy challenge, Howick-Pakuranga versus North Shore last Wednesday night. Well, our top order fired despite a splutter from our opening batsman Leonard McLaren who was bowled by a googly from Ralph Hart after a lengthy stay at the crease. Batting went down to number 6, with Martin Dreyer, Ewen Green, Daniel Gong, Benjamin Lim and Stan Yee all putting points on the board. But after Paul Spiller was undone by Jeff McCrone the rot set in. Middle order players Karl Zhu and Terry Shen gritted it out to add to our total, but the tail never wagged until the last man. NS 14 HP 6. Or is that a pro-rata loss by 7 wickets Accountant Martin Dreyer? Thanks for organising our team to Tony Booth and Judd Zhan. Congratulations to North Shore for their win, retaining the Jenkins Trophy.

TOTALS 13-1
Well done to Howick-Pakuranga. Thank goodness for our Juniors! We breed them young, we breed them tough at Howick-Pakuranga. Some very interesting games. Top board between Stan Yee and Hilton Jacobs started out as a Reti, then turned Nimzovich-Larsen, but finished as an English Symmetrical. A positional game with neither side gaining an advantage. Board 2 between Andrew Janisz and Jeun Gesmundo saw Gesmundo overlooking Bb5+ and forcing ...Ke7 early in the opening. The rest was torture. Board 3 saw James Walsh tying up Terry Shen so that his Queenside was totally immobilised. But Walsh pushed too hard, sacrificing a piece. Shen defended safely and came out on top. Board 4 was probably the best game of the night, with Harry Bong falling for a Knight capture ... Qxd4 and trapping his Queen in the process after Rd1. When have you seen a Queen trapped in the middle of the board? I had the score sheet but it disappeared whilst I was putting the furniture away.
