18th May 2013 - The Oceania Zonal was held in Fiji from 4-10 May 2013. The winner of the Women's section was won by IM Irina Berezina (after winning the playoff match 2-0 against WIM Emma Guo after they both finished on 8/9 points). Irina will now represent Oceania at the next Women's World Cup. This is an impressive result - since I (Paul Spiller) have been playing in Zonal's (2002) she has won in Fiji in 2002, 2007 and now 2013 and also in Auckland 2005 and in Rotorua 2011. She was pipped into second place by IM Arianne Caoli at Tweed Heads, Australia in 2009. I think that she also gained an IM title at the 1999 Zonal on the Gold Coast. The Open section was won by FM Igor Bjelobrk (now IM elect) with 7.5/9 after defeating GM Darryl Johansen in the last round. Igor used to live in Auckland but his family shifted to Australia about 2000 or 2001. He has been close to getting the IM title before and only missed out by the narrowest of tie-breaks back in 2009 at the Tweed Heads Zonal. Follow the link below for an interesting game played in Round 8 between local player Noel Adricula and Paul Spiller.

09/05/13 N Adricula vs P Spiller 0-1

Congratulations to Paul, who became a CM elect after finishing with 4.5/9.
